1400 protestors turn out to women’s march in Shipley

More than 1400 people gathered in Shipley Market Square today to protest against the local MP’s support for Donald Trump, joining worldwide support for women’s rights.

Men, women and children of all ages came together to show solidarity to the march taking place in Washington, following the inauguration of President Trump.

The peaceful protest was organised by the Shipley Feminist Zealots, a group that formed following anti-feminist comments from local Conservative MP Philip Davies. Speaking at a conference in August 2016, he said “feminist zealots really do want women to have their cake and eat it.”

The event also included short speeches from local women on issues that matter to them. Aisha Ali-Khan, a protester from Keighley, said “I came to send a powerful message of solidarity, peace, equality and justice. Behaviour like Philip Davies’ can affect the politics of future generations and I want to do something to challenge it”.
